Chapter 20

Cody

That afternoon, Cody pulled up to Tilly's Café. He was relieved when he spotted Sebastian's truck but nerves took hold again.

He found parking and gazed around. It was a nice Saturday and people were out and enjoying the summer. With so many events on, there was no shortage of tourists and locals mingling. Cody really needed to get out there and experience more, too. The date at Congress Square had been fun.

When he stepped inside of the café, Sebastian was in a booth in the back corner. As soon as he saw the handsome man, his heart flipped. He wrung his hands a couple of times before finding the courage to stroll back and join him.

“Hey,” Sebastian greeted as Cody approached, a small smile on his lips. There was something else behind Sebastian's eyes, too, that Cody couldn't place. He seemed more guarded that day. Was he afraid of the conversation? Or had something else happened?

“Hey.” Cody sat down across from Sebastian. “How are you?”

“Not too bad. I spent the morning helping my mom around the house. She's terrible with keeping up on renos.”

Cody smiled slightly. “Ah, are you close to your mother?”

“I am, yeah. I try to see her at least once a week. She lives alone and I worry about her sometimes. We have lots of family around the area, though, so she's always visiting or being visited.”

“Oh, that's good,” Cody responded as he picked up the menu. He wasn't really hungry but needed something to hold to keep his hands busy. “It'd be nice if my brothers moved closer. They might like Portland...”

Sebastian chuckled. “This place is beautiful. I was born and raised here. Sure, I think about traveling sometimes but my work doesn't really allow for that. I get my vacation time but...”

“Where would you go right now if you could?” Cody asked, happy to latch onto this conversation instead of the one he was building up for.

“Barcelona,” Sebastian responded without missing a beat. “It looks beautiful.”

Cody had not been expecting Barcelona. He assumed that Sebastian would want to go to Las Vegas. It reminded him that he barely knew Sebastian yet.

“That's really cool.”

“Yeah. So what do you want to talk about?”

Well, damn. Sebastian wasn't going to let him off the hook too easily. He appreciated him not beating around the bush.

Cody shifted, putting the menu down. “Where do you see this going?”

Sebastian leaned back against the plush seat, surveying Cody. Was that the kind of look he gave his suspects? “That depends.”

“Depends on what?”

“What we both are looking for.”

Cody straightened up, his hands getting clammy. There was such a whirlwind of emotion going through him. “I... Dammit, Sebastian, I like you. I probably shouldn't, but I do.”

“Why shouldn't you?”

“Because we barely know each other.”

“There's nothing wrong with liking someone you just met. That's typically a good sign, y'know.”

“And then there's the fact that we work together.”

“Right.”

“And that I don't know what you want from this.”

“Hence this conversation,” Sebastian drawled.

Cody bristled and nodded, meeting Sebastian's eyes.
